Dave Borins thinks big. An engaging songwriter and a self-assured singer, he had a stack of bright new material — and last October he invited his fans to join him for two nights at Hugh’s Room to help him record (and raise funds for) a new album.
Now, nine months later, he’s launching the CD, titled The Room Lights Up, at a picnic at Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park on Wednesday August 24. He and his band will play acoustic versions of the songs, and he’ll be joined by other artists who are part of Toronto’s burgeoning roots music scene.
Borins promises lots of music, and free copies of the new CD to the fans who supported the original recording sessions. “It’s not easy for independent artists to get recording projects off the ground — and it’s usually done with the aid of grants,” he says. “In this case, I thought that the best way to do it was to involve the fans, and give them a key role in supporting the project and paying the basic costs.”
The new CD, produced by Christ Stringer (Timber Timbre, Obijou) also features a handful of studio performances, and was mixed in Vancouver by Juno-winning musician Steve Dawson.
NOTE: Dave Borins and his band will also light up the room (with brother Marc Borins’ band Atom and the Volumes) at the Piston, 937 Bloor St. W. on August 18th.
